My normal method to square is to put in my tramming fixture and tap the column back and forth until it's good, then tighten some and repeat. I think this might a problem because knocking the column back and forth seems like a good way to grind up particles that act like ball bearings, so now I need to take the column off and clean it up.

Re: Taig vs Sieg with a twist. Your accuracy with a CNC conversion will rely on several things: the tightness and fit of gibs, the ballscrew pitch combined with the motors steps/rotation and any gearing in between, the tool used, tool deflection, table/bench/stand rigidity, machine harmonics, and other factors.

The gibs are the movable part of the dove tail on your head stock where is slides on the ways. I am not sure how Taig does it on their mill. On my Taig lathe there are two screws with lock nuts on the back side of the saddle. To tighten or losen the gibbs you losen the nuts and either backout the screws or tighten them as needed.
