Color charts can be created for any medium, including watercolors, oil paints, acrylics, and pastels. To create your chart, draw a grid with as many columns as you have colors plus an extra column to add the color name and brand. The grid squares should be large enough to paint a small sample color in.

In painting it refers to a thin transparent layer of colour that is laid on to a ground evenly in order to colour it. The layer is thinned with solvent or with a fast drying medium. It is then left to dry before the actual painting of the picture begins. Many artists will leave patches of the imprimatura layer showing through in their work.

All the bottom boxes on your chart will be the same value: nearly white. The value of the other squares will be determined by the value of your master color. You will be working one column at a time, taking five value steps with each color. The first column of each chart is the master color's value scale.

All of the colours come in two sizes, the smaller-than-usual 20 ml tubes which are ideal for plein air painting or trying a colour, and the larger-than-usual 60 ml size. The blacks and whites also come in extra large 150 ml tubes. The Charvin pinks, oranges and yellows I was using, just a small part of their range.
