We have found that the lower cost option of regrinding the bed alone has unwittingly misled some buyers inspecting pre-owned Myford Lathes offered by used equipment suppliers. To many a smooth, clean lathe bed is a sign that the lathe has been cared for and not subjected to heavy wear.

130. Sep 26, 2017. #5. Just for reference I was quoted £850 for a bed 're grind, 're fit of the saddle, compound and top slide. This was for a Myford ML4 7x24" lathe, this doesn't include if any parts would have to be remade or replaced. Considering my lathe was bought for £350, with tooling, chucks ect.

A scraped bed can be touched up if needed, a ground bed gets a hard skin from the grinding process. Given what (I think) is likely the size of that lathe, regrinding will be a job for someone with a really big way grinder. Finding the tools like really big straightedges to do way surfaces as large as a lathe is a project in itself.

Hi there group, been reading and researching here for the past two months and have learnt quite a bit. What it boils down to is our Colchester Student 1800 has gotten beyond economical repair ( worn quick speed gear change mechanism and noisy headstock ) and is being replaced with a newer used Harrison UK built variable speed 13" lathe.

If so, regrinding the jaws will most likely improve things, but won't restore the chuck to it's original accuracy and repeatability - particularly when gripping something of a different diameter than they were ground at. A few worn chucks came with my lathe. Some with reground jaws - all not of much use on a lathe.
